For some months now, listeners to FREIRAD – Freies Radio Innsbruck have been able to hear unusual interpretations of customary radio formats such as jingles, hits or radio course. These vocal formats „smuggled“ into the normal radio program and broadcast with no prior announcement are part of the work You are a Dancer by French choreographers Annie Vigier and Franck Apertet (les gens d’Uterpan), who use the radio waves—as other artists do physical space—as an exhibition space.

This „exhibition“, which reaches into the listeners‘ private sphere, is being curated by Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen. Through the medium of radio Les gens d’Uterpan involve the listeners in choreographic (rehearsal) work with the help of instructions, demands, explanatory systems, and rhythmicized scores. In this way, they raise questions about the construction of choreographic authority and power over the bodies of potential performers, while simultaneously thematizing the inherent power of audiovisual mass media and their imperative usage.

As from 5 December, to conclude the project, the „News“ will be broadcast on Freirad for five days. In the run-up to these broadcasts, a project presentation with subsequent discussion will take place in Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen on 1 December at 19:00. Franck Apertet (les gens d’Uterpan) will present the project and talk with Iris Julian (art theorist and choreographer) and Andrei Siclodi (curator) about the contexts and special features of choreographic work in the radio medium, but also about aspects of realizing an „exhibition“ in radio format.

On 2 December at 19:00 Franck Apertet and Andrei Siclodi will discuss live on Radio Freirad about the project. This broadcast will be republished on 5 December in the upcoming issue of the Mnemoscape Magazine. Entitled „On Remoteness“, the new issue of Mnemoscape Magazine explores the relationship between sound-based practices, oral histories and aural cultures, through the lenses of the notions of distance and proximity, intended both in their spatial and temporal dimension.

The work of Annie VIGIER und Franck APERTET (LES GENS D’UTERPAN) questions the norms and conventions that govern exhibitions and the performing arts. Relying on the mechanisms of adjustment of the individual, the body and creation to these contexts, the artists create a critical work based on the two choreographers‘ initial practice. Methodically, their reflection takes place through the displacement and recontextualization of the processes of action and demonstration that belong to the field of fine and performing arts. In their work they study the parameters of artistic approach, communication and archiving, as well as the economic dimension and institutional situation of its production. They process each step constituting the practice of an artist and so highlight the responsibility of visitors, sponsors and institutions in their work.

Iris JULIAN works at the interface of fine art, choreography and cultural science: after completing her studies in art history (2005) she was assistant dramaturge and assistant of the artistic director at Tanzquartier in Vienna, received grants from ImPulsTanz, and participated in the training program for choreographers at Tanzquartier Vienna. Her current dissertation project at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna investigates innovative forms of cooperation in the field of choreography. Parallel to her theoretical studies, in her artistic practice Iris Julian has worked with choreographers incl.: Daniel Aschwanden, Philipp Gehmacher, Mariella Greil, Janez Janša, Xavier Le Roy and Philippe Rièra (Superamas).

Andrei SICLODI is director of Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen and curator of the project You are a Dancer by Annie Vigier and Franck Apertet (les gens d’Uterpan) at Freirad – Freies Radio Innsbruck.

Seit einigen Monaten können die Hörer_innen von FREIRAD – Freies Radio Innsbruck ungewöhnliche Interpretationen gängiger Radioformate wie Jingle, Hit oder Radiokurs hören. Diese in das übliche Radioprogramm „eingeschmuggelten“ und unangekündigt ausgestrahlten Sprachformate sind Teil der Arbeit You are a Dancer der französischen Choreograph_innen Annie Vigier und Franck Apertet (LES GENS D’UTERPAN), die die Radiowellen – wie andere Künstler_innen den physischen Raum – als Ausstellungsraum nutzen.

Diese „Ausstellung“, die bis in die Privatsphäre der Zuhörer_innen reicht, ist vom Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen kuratiert. Durch das Medium Radio beziehen les gens d’Uterpan mit Hilfe von Anweisungen, Aufforderungen, Erklärungssystemen und rhytmisierten Partituren die Zuhörer_innen in die choreografische (Probe-)Arbeit mit ein. Damit werfen sie Fragen nach der Konstruktion choreografischer Autorität und Macht gegenüber den Körpern potenzieller Performer_innen auf, thematisieren aber zugleich auch die inhärente Macht audiovisueller Massenmedien und deren imperativen Gebrauch.

Zu den Künstler_innen:

Die Arbeit von Annie VIGIER und Franck APERTET (LES GENS D’UTERPAN) hinterfragt die Normen und Konventionen, die Ausstellungen und darstellende Künste bestimmen. Die beiden Künstler_innen greifen auf die Mechanismen der Anpassung des Einzelnen, des Körpers und der künstlerischen Produktion auf ebendiese Kontexte zurück und schaffen so ein kritisches Werk, das auf der ursprünglichen Praxis der beiden Choreograf_innen basiert. Methodisch erfolgt ihre Reflexion durch die Verschiebung und Rekontextualisierung der Prozesse von Handlungen und Demonstrationen im Sinne kreativer Performance-Kunst, die zum Feld der bildenden und darstellenden Kunst gehören.
Les gens d’Uterpan beschäftigen sich in ihrer Arbeit u.a. mit den Parametern des künstlerischen Ansatzes, der Kommunikation und des Archivierens wie auch mit der wirtschaftlichen Dimension und der institutionellen Situation ihrer Produktion. Dabei verarbeiten sie jeden Schritt, der die Praxis Kunstschaffender ausmacht, und ziehen so Besucher_innen, Sponsor_innen und Institutionen in ihrem Werk zur Verantwortung.

Iris JULIAN arbeitet an der Schnittstelle Bildende Kunst, Choreografie und Kulturwissenschaft: Nach dem Studienabschluss im Fach Kunstgeschichte (2005) war sie Assistentin der Dramaturgie und Intendanz am Tanzquartier Wien, erhielt Stipendien bei ImPulsTanz (Wien) und nahm am Trainingsprogramm für Choreograf_innen am Tanzquartier Wien teil. Ihr aktuelles Dissertationsprojekt an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wien untersucht innovative Formen der Zusammenarbeit im Feld Choreografie. Parallel zu ihren theoretischen Studien, in ihrer künstlerischen Praxis, arbeitet(e) Iris Julian u. a. mit folgenden Choreograf_innen zusammen: Daniel Aschwanden, Philipp Gehmacher, Mariella Greil, Janez Janša, Xavier Le Roy und Philippe Rièra (Superamas).
